In 1969, Peugeot presented the 304 model in Paris. Although the car was technically based on the 204 model, it was also intended to replace the somewhat outdated, larger Peugeot 404. The hobby editors wanted to find out in an extensive test whether it could succeed in this. This report reproduces the original text from back then and shows the almost 1.2 million compact front-wheel drive model in historical photographs.
The Peugeot 304 Coupé and Cabriolet were pretty little cars with quite different characters. With its hatchback and large tailgate, the Coupé was almost a small estate car, whereas the Cabriolet was built more for pleasure trips for two. And while there was no lack of fresh air in the convertible, a little more ventilation would have been desirable in the coupé. This historical test report reveals the rest.
The choice of mid-range vehicles in Germany at the beginning of the 1970s was diverse. Front or rear-wheel drive, front or rear engine, water cooling or air cooling were on offer, as were two or four doors. In a 1970 comparison, the Ford 15 M had to compete against the Audi 60, Peugeot 304 and VW 1600.
