In the midst of the jet euphoria that spilled over from the USA to Europe in the 1950s, Battista Pinin Farina developed a series of open and closed sports cars based on Lancia, which adopted design elements from the world of aircraft and were very unusual due to their aerodynamic appearance. Although customers were not very fond of these bold designs, these special bodies nevertheless influenced car design for years. This report traces the history of the Lancia Aurelia pf 200 and shows pictures of almost every example ever built.
In 1950, the Lancia Aurelia saloon was the most highly regarded new model. But there was not only the self-supporting saloon, coachbuilders could also buy a sturdily constructed chassis and realize their own bodies on it. Vignale worked with Michelotti to create many of these chassis, but for one of them he used the design of another draughtsman. And the latter in turn was inspired by an American. This vehicle report describes the beginnings of the Lancia Aurelia and the very special coupé based on drawings by Rudolfo Bonetto.
In 1953, the "MoMa" selected ten cars and invited the public to a "non-commercial car exhibition" in New York, which paid homage to the vehicle design of the time. Curator Arthur Dexler presented American, Italian, French, English and German automobiles from the brands Porsche, Aston Martin, Simca, Siata, Lancia, Cunningham, Nash-Healey, Ford, Studebaker and MG, which certainly sparked discussions about the quality and future orientation of car body designs. This report describes the circumstances of the exhibition at that time and shows all ten vehicles presented in over 100 historical and current pictures, supplemented with many vehicle brochures and the original exhibition catalog from 1953.
