William Lyons and William Walmsley founded a company in Blackpool UK in 1922 that manufactured sidecars for motorbikes, which were sold under the name Swallow. The Swallow Sidecar Company expanded its production to include coachwork in 1927. In 1930, the company changed its name to Swallow Coachbuilding and Sidecar Company. In 1931 an independent model also appeared on a chassis from the Standard Motor Company, the SS 1. Now called Standard Swallow, the first sports car from S.S. Cars Ltd, the SS 90, appeared in 1935. In 1935, equipped with an OHV instead of SV engine, the suffix ‘Jaguar’ was added to the type designation of the SS Jaguar 2.5-litre Saloon for the first time, followed by the SS Jaguar 100 sports car in 1936. At the beginning of 1945, William Lyons changed the name of his company to Jaguar Cars Ltd. In 1948, Jaguar presented the XK 120 sports car and the Mk V Saloon as the first new post-war designs. The XK 120 had a newly developed DOHC in-line six-cylinder engine. The MK VII Saloon followed in 1951, the 2.4 Litre (Mk I) in 1955, the Mk 2 in 1959, the E-Type in 1961, the Mk 10 in 1963 and others. From 1950 to 2008, Jaguar was based on Browns Lane in Coventry. 1961 Takeover by Daimler, 1963 by Coventry Climax. 1966 Merger with British Motor Company to form British Motors Holding, from 1968 British Leyland Motors. 1968 Presentation of the XJ and 1975 of the XJ-S. 1984 Return to independence. 1986 new XJ40. The Jaguar Coupé Meteor by Stabilimenti Farina followed the style of its coachbuilder a little too closely and its brand a little too little, so that it was always a little too confusing. In their wildest dreams, every collector hopes to be able to pull a car out of a barn, rusty, dusty, but of a significance that would amaze the experts. This is exactly what happened in the fall of 1997, when Terry Larson, a well-known Jaguar expert from Mesa, Arizona, pulled a Jaguar C-Type that was thought to be lost out of a dilapidated woodshed in Oroville, Northern California. The world of Jaguar enthusiasts took notice: a prodigal son had returned. In 2000, the restoration and completion was completed, and then it went from strength to strength: participation in the 2001 Mille Miglia, FIA Heritage Certificate, presentation in Villa d'Este, trip to Le Mans, etc.

Regardless of its condition, a Jaguar D-Type is always worth several hundred thousand francs, even though the model has only won a few races. The value of a Jaguar racing car, be it a Type C or D, is measured primarily by the victories it has won in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The C-Types drew the world's attention to the Jaguar brand with their victories in 1951 and 1953, and the D-Types secured the ongoing sales success with their victories in the years 1956 to 1958.
The Jaguar D-Type continued the wave of success of the C-Types at Le Mans. Jaguar had designed it especially for this purpose. Anyone who wanted Jaguar technology at the end of the 1950s but was no longer happy with the now somewhat old-fashioned design of the XK150 could be helped by the independent coachbuilders. The compact Jaguar was launched in 1955. Alongside the large saloon (Mark VII) and the XK sports car, this was the third Jaguar model series to be equipped with the same, then very modern six-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts. For the smaller sedan, the displacement was reduced to 2.4 liters. However, when it quickly became clear that more power would also be of interest in this sportier and more manageable car, the 3.4-liter engine used in the XK sports car and the large Jaguar saloon was also offered from 1957. Between 1955 and 1959, over 37,000 Jaguar Mark 1s were built, around 20,000 of them with the 2.4-liter engine and over 17,000 with the more powerful 3.4-liter engine. At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961, Jaguar presented a new sports car, the Jaguar E-Type 3.8 liter, creating a sensation. In July 1961, Motor Rundschau conducted a short test of the Jaguar E-Type Coupé and found that the Jaguar was appealing as a car because it was easy to handle despite its high performance, its technical details were based on tried-and-tested components and because it was spacious despite its low body line.
The Jaguar E-Type is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Gran Turismos and a design and technical highlight in automotive history, although it is not the inventor of this type of car. Many designers and car experts refer to the 1947 Cisitalia 202 from the pen of Pininfarina as the forefather of the classic Gran Turismo. It already had the flat basic shape with a steep windshield positioned far back, a long hood, wheels positioned very far forward, short overhangs and a flowing rear end. In addition, there were the simple lines, which, with the exception of the developed rear fenders, corresponded to the pontoon shape. This type of styling has lost none of its fascination to this day, because it is regarded worldwide and across cultures - similar to a Greek temple - as the ideal. The Jaguar Mark X was a real all-rounder. It offered luxury, top-quality workmanship and great driving performance at a reasonable price - if you knew how to appreciate its qualities. For the 1964 model year, Jaguar filled the gap between the Mark II and Mark X with the S-Type. Today, even small cars offer 12 kg per horsepower. But is this power-to-weight ratio also sufficient for a large saloon with a sporty appearance? In 2007, Automobil Revue subjected a 41-year-old E-Type to the tough AR test. The open-top Jaguar E-Type from 1967 performed very, very well. After the Mark X had become a little too expansive, Jaguar returned to the slim sports saloon with the XJ 6, without sacrificing the typical English ambience. The Americans were great fans of the Jaguar E-Type, in some cases buying over three quarters of the annual production. No wonder, then, that their demands and regulations had an impact on the technology and appearance of the sports car presented in 1961. This is how the second series finally came about in 1968, with noticeable differences to its predecessor. But is the Series 2 E-Type therefore inferior to the earlier models and less fun to drive? In the 1971 AR test, the editors stated that the E-Type V12 was blessed with outstanding driving performance. Their summary reads as follows: "The third generation of the Jaguar E-type with the new V12 engine also presents itself as a reasonably priced sports car for the individualist in relation to its real top performance; a large, smooth yet powerful engine, exceptional driving performance, a safe chassis and high comfort are paired with a body that is no longer modern but still attractive. Some shortcomings in the interior should definitely be eliminated. Our next step is to give the E-type a new look, even though we know full well that the real E-type fans will turn away from us in horror."
Although it had already been on the market for ten years, a new twelve-cylinder engine gave the Jaguar E-Type another lasting upgrade in 1971. Hardly any competitor offered comparable performance, and even sports cars from Italy that were twice as expensive could hardly outperform the E-Type. The V12 E-Type was convincing almost across the board, but its comparatively high fuel consumption brought it to an end after just four years of production due to the oil crisis and rising fuel prices.
Between 1968 and 1992, Jaguar produced the XJ series saloons in three series. Equipped with six- and twelve-cylinder engines, these vehicles offered upscale luxury and fast transportation. For a number of years, the Jaguar XJ 12 was the only saloon available with twelve cylinders. Although it was not a luxury car, this engine offered real driving luxury.
