In the mid-sixties, Japanese cars were among the exotic cars on our roads. They were preceded by a bad reputation, but this was not always justified, as the test of the magazine 'hobby', which was dedicated to the Isuzu Bellett 1500, shows. Despite a positive rating, the modern four-door model did not succeed in Europe, as we know today. This article reproduces the original wording of the 1965 test report and illustrates it with historical photographs and sales brochures.
The Isuzu 117 was the coupé version of the Isuzu Florian. It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who, however, did not take the Japanese production infrastructure of the time into consideration. As a result, the first examples all had to be produced by hand. It was only after GM moved in that money was available for new sheet metal presses and the pretty coupé, which was available with a wide variety of engines, gradually became a production car. Nevertheless, the production figures remained modest. This article is dedicated to the Japanese beauty built between 1968 and 1981 and shows it in historical and current photographs.
Design by Giorgetto Giugiaro, chassis by Lotus, four-cylinder turbo engine, rear-wheel drive and suitability for everyday use, built by the traditional Japanese manufacturer Isuzu. Customers should have flocked to it! Yes, perhaps, if they could have. But the coupé was only sold in a few countries. And only for a few years. This driving report is about an Isuzu Piazza Turbo from 1990 and shows it in many current and historical photos. Of course, there is also a sound sample and, as an encore, a test video from 1988.
