If you can't buy it, build it! Walt Hansgen was an ambitious amateur racing driver from New Jersey, USA, who wanted to buy the latest sports car from Europe, the Jaguar C-Type, in 1952. But none of the 7 examples brought to the USA were intended for Hansgen, so he built his own interpretation of the fastest racing sports car of his time.
The Ford GT 40 Mark II with chassis no. 1019 won the 1968 Barcelona 6-hour race on the notorious Montjiuch circuit. The GT 40 was driven by the two drivers Brian Miur and Paco Goodyear. The car belonged to Paul Hawkins at the time and is now in Spanish ownership.
On the occasion of the Le Mans Classics event, the author had the opportunity to photograph the 1966 Le Mans winner on a lap by himself. Unfortunately, this lap took place on the darkest night. A good ten years later, he looks back and writes this very special Christmas story.
It was the modifications that Carroll Shelby made to the Ford Mustang that turned the pony car into a serious competitor on the racetrack. The Shelby Mustang GT 350 and even more so the GT 350R were the cars to beat on America's racetracks. A few examples found their way to Europe, one of which was bought by the famous Swiss racing driver Herbert Müller, who drove it to the race track, but also used it in hill climb and circuit racing. This article describes the special R models and Herbert Müller's car, supplemented by memories of his son and illustrated with current and historical photos.
The Ford GT 40 is rightly regarded as one of the most successful sports cars of all time and, as the drivers of the time assure us, also one of the most comfortable for covering long distances. It was therefore only natural to derive road vehicles from the racing car. But here success fell by the wayside, only a few were built, most of which were eventually converted into racing cars anyway. This report tells the story of the Ford GT 40 and the two road-going versions and looks at a one-off that should have definitively positioned the GT 40 as a luxury sports car. The report is illustrated with over 120 photos, some of which have never been seen before.
