When the Ford Sierra was launched in the late summer of 1982, its modern design was met with surprised and skeptical looks, because in comparison to the angular and almost square Taunus, the Sierra shone exclusively with aerodynamic curves. The XR4i took it to the extreme with its unusual side window design and double rear wing. With its 2.8-liter V6 engine and 150 hp, it was also a sporty match for the competition, but without being able to replace the Capri, as Ford had probably originally planned. This driving report portrays an early Sierra XR4i in current and historical pictures, in the sales brochure and acoustically.
The new Ford Sierra XR4i raised an often-asked question again 40 years ago: Who builds the best family-friendly sports sedan? A comparison test with the still freshly christened Alfa Romeo GTV6 and BMW 323i was intended to answer this question. This article reproduces the original wording from back then, supplemented by historical images and sales literature of the three rivals.
Ford had its sights set on the successful BMW M3 and Mercedes 190 E 2.3-16 sports cars and wanted to cause a sensation in Group A racing. We tell the story of the "Cossies", whose huge rear wing not only caused a stir, but also provided the necessary downforce at high speeds.
