Between 1961 and 1967, the Siata company built an elegant, sporty coupé based on the Fiat 1300/1500 saloon. In some markets, the car was also offered by the German NSU-Fiat. The design of the coupé, of which several thousand were produced, was by Giovanni Michelotti, with 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 liter engines being used. The Fiat 1500 L was not a new model as such, but was the enlarged version of the Fiat 1500. The size and price were aimed at families and their budgets. For a relatively fair price, it offered a high level of comfort and safety. In the summer of 1963, the magazine 'hobby' wanted to find out whether the Fiat 1500 L was also convincing in everyday use. The Fiat 1500 was not cheaper than its German and French competitors at the time. However, as Turin supplied expensive extras such as front disc brakes as standard and gave the pretty car a good dose of temperament, the Italian was ahead of its competitors in many respects. It was nimble, economical, spacious and safe to drive - there really wasn't much to criticize about the revised Fiat 1500. With an extended wheelbase and hardened crankshaft, it made up for the two biggest weaknesses of its predecessor. The negative aspects of the Italian were limited to minor details and the stubborn steering wheel gearshift, for which there was an alternative, at least in Germany.
