The Wankel saloons Citroën GS Birotor and NSU Ro 80 were siblings and some of the technical differences only became apparent in the details. In terms of bodywork, however, they took completely different paths. While the Citroën was based on a weaker production counterpart, NSU developed a completely new and pioneering vehicle with the Ro 80. At the end of the day, however, both cars meant heavy losses for their manufacturers and, in the case of the NSU, even the end of the brand. The qualities of the Citroën GS were so outstanding and well-known that they were hardly worth mentioning. That's why this historical test report initially reads like a slating, although all the points of criticism are only minor. The road holding, comfort and brakes were excellent, as were the engine's smoothness and revving pleasure.
The Citroën GS Camargue formed the basis of the collaboration between the French car manufacturer Citroën and the coachbuilder and designer Bertone. Marcello Gandini created a shape that was significantly less radical than the Stratos Zero or the Lamborghini Countach, for example. It remained a prototype. Citroën was one of the companies that was convinced of the future viability of the Wankel engine. Together with NSU, it had invested in the Comotor company and launched the first vehicle with a single-disc Wankel engine on the market in 1970 with the Citroën M35. In 1973, the company followed suit and presented the Citroën GS Birotor with a twin-disc rotary engine. However, this car was not destined for a great future either, and after only 857 units had been built, the complex production was discontinued. This report goes into the history of the GS Birotor and shows the car in extensive historical photographs.
After a hesitant start, the Citroën GS enjoyed an upward trend on the German market in the first half of 1975. The GS-X in particular, launched in October 1974, brought a significant upturn. Shortly afterwards, the GS-X2 was added with 63 (instead of 54) hp. Citroën GS - the original marvel
From 1970 to 1986, Citroën built the GS/GSA model, a car that was different from all its competitors. With a new type of aerodynamic saloon body with a hatchback and air-cooled boxer engine at the front, Citroën demonstrated its courage for independence and individualism. The GS also proved to be a match for the competition and almost 2.5 million units were built.
