Still plagued by design flaws at the beginning of its production, the Isabella had developed into a solid automobile by the beginning of the 1960s at the latest. With its unrivaled TS engine, the still attractive bodywork and the spacious interior, it impressed the test drivers, who also noted a few strange peculiarities of the Borgward sedan. This article quotes the original driving report from 1960 and shows the Isabella in extensive historical photos and sales material.
In 1959, the range of sports cars on offer was still quite limited. The magazine 'hobby' counted around 30 models and the comparison fitted onto just a few magazine pages. The author Werner Oswald saw the reason for the comparatively small number of models on offer in the transition to self-supporting bodies and the need for rationalization. To this day, the car brand "Borgward" has a special ring to it. Progressive and above all elegant cars were produced in Bremen, desirable and reasonably affordable. Although the Isabella Coupé was one of the more expensive products from Bremen, it was still cheaper to buy than a similarly powerful Mercedes-Benz 190 SL or a Porsche 356. And for many people at the time, it was much prettier to look at. This driving report describes the history of the pretty coupé and shows it in contemporary and historical pictures.
Borgward's mid-range was regarded as a mature, reliable and, on top of that, extremely attractive design without any significant weaknesses. With the new automatic transmission developed by the company, the Isabella came a little closer to perfection. This article reproduces a test report from "Automobil Illustrierte" from 1960 in the original wording and explains the functioning of the "Hansamatic" in detail.
