While Europe's reigning monarchs swapped their luxury carriages for luxury automobiles early on, the US president did not switch to the automobile until 1909. The showpiece of President Taft's White House garage was, appropriately enough, a White Steamer, manufactured by the White Company in Cleveland, Ohio, which was registered in 1906. Prior to this, steam cars were merely a business branch of the White Sewing Machine Co. introduced in 1900 by the founding sons Rollin, Windsor and Walter. Initially, high-format vehicles with chain drive and "cow-tail steering" were offered, with a two-cylinder steam engine installed under the car floor. In 1902, a condenser was created to convert steam back into water. In 1903, the engine was moved to the front (drive via cardan shaft to the rear wheels).
