In his workshop in Prague-Smichov, the locksmith's son Josef Walter, born in 1873, repaired bicycles from 1898, constructed his first motorcycle in 1902 and tricycles from 1908. They had a wide front wheel with"cow-tail steering" and could carry up to five people. V2 engines with a displacement of 500 to 1250 cm3 ensured a speedy ride. In 1913, J. Walter & Co. GmbH was founded in Prague-Jinonitz for the construction of four-wheeled cars with four-cylinder engines. They were characterized by quality and reliability. In 1922, chief designer V. Kumpera took over the company (Josef Walter founded a gearwheel factory). Aircraft engines, trucks, fire engines and buses were soon also produced.
