Bonhams opened the series of Scottsdale auctions on January 16, 2014, with 102 cars on offer, comprising a broad mix of pre- and post-war, sports cars and limousines as well as affordable and high-end offerings. The total sales volume amounted to USD 23.5 million (EUR 17.13 million or CHF 21.3 million). On average, a car was sold for USD 273,000 (Euro 199,000 or CHF 248,000). 15% of the vehicles could not be sold, 33% were offered without a reserve price. The star of the auction was not one of the Ferrari, Alfa Romeo or Delahaye on offer, but a VW Beetle Cabriolet built by Karmann in 1979, which sold for a whopping 281% of the median estimate, i.e. USD 50,600 (EUR 36,900 or CHF 46,000).
