The biggest change was the name of the auction house. Instead of Dorotheum, Humer Granner & Co. held the auction at Classic-Expo Salzburg for the first time this year (on October 19, 2024). Otherwise, everything remained the same: the location, the procedure, the auctioneer - even the backdrop for the catalog photos.
The assortment of 108 lots was also as wide-ranging as usual, from a pre-war motorcycle for 1500 euros to a Shelby Cobra for 1.2 million euros according to the highest estimate. However, he fell well short of this. With a top bid of 840,000 euros, the red 289 Mk II was even below the lower estimate - and below the reserve price. The Cobra was left standing.
In total, only 20 of the 108 lots could not be knocked down, one of which (the Ford Model A with lot number 75) had been withdrawn in advance. The other 19 slow sellers failed to reach their reserve prices. The Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Coupé (no. 70) was also on the verge of being knocked down at 50,000 euros, until a bidder in the auction room picked up his card at the very last second and won it for 60,000 euros.
The fiercest bidding battles tended to take place in the price range below 10,000 euros. For example, a 1962 Puch DS 60R was bid up in increments of 200 from 3000 to 9400 euros. The Lancia Kappa Coupé with a starting price of 1000 euros only fell at 7000 euros. That's 2.7 times the estimated price! Who bid more?
The 1992 BMW M5 also went down like a tennis match, although it remained within the estimate with a hammer price of 26,000 euros. Just below that, but still impressive, was the result of a BMW 323i with four-digit mileage. This sculpture was worth 58,000 euros to one bidder.
All three of the pre-war BMWs fell short of expectations and consequently remained unsold. Although the sales rate of 82 percent was not bad, the proportion of lots that failed to reach their estimate was similarly high. Only 21 of the 108 vehicles on offer were able to meet or even exceed the estimate.
The bargain of the day was the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 180 D: with a selling price of €10,350, it achieved just over half of its median estimate. On average, 82 percent of the estimate was bid for a lot, which is why the total proceeds of 5.3 million euros did not reach the previously set/estimated target.
