Universal Power Drives Ltd. was based in Perivale, Middlesex: it was one of those small British manufacturers that enriched the automotive world with an individual two-seater with sporting ambitions, a wealth of technical ideas, craftsmanship and a good dose of enthusiasm. The Unipower GT even added a successful design that combined streamlining and elegance. The fastback coupé, designed by racing and bobsleigh driver Andrew Hedges, celebrated its premiere at the London Racing Car Show in January 1966. It featured a tubular trellis frame and the rear-mounted drive unit from the Mini Cooper, resulting in an independent, sporty mid-engine concept.
