For decades, India's passenger car production was limited to the Hindustan (corresponding to the Morris Oxford built until 1959), Premier (Fiat 1100, as built until 1969) and Standard (originally an English brand, derived from the Triumph Herald built until 1971). Total output reached around 30,000 cars in 1980 and a good 53,000 in 1985. Imported cars were only affordable for the elite of the billion-strong population. After three-wheelers developed by Reliant in England had already been built in Bangalore, Sipani Automobiles Ltd was founded there in 1978. In 1983, the new Reliant Kitten went into production under the model name Dolphin: a cubically shaped small car based on a sectional iron frame with a GRP body and an 848 cc aluminum engine, also a Reliant design.
