Heini Walter - nobody called him Heinrich - should actually have lived in the mountains. He was born on July 28, 1927 in the remote Alpthal in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland, and from the age of two Walter lived on the main road in Aesch, just outside Basel, until his death on Tuesday last week.It was less due to his birthplace that he celebrated his greatest successes in mountain races. Rather, it was the nearby Gempen - and a Bugatti. "Three days before the Gempen race in 1947, a 2-liter Bugatti was on display in Basel. As this racing car and I were of the same vintage, I couldn't help but buy it and drive it in the Gempen race. I came second behind Aebli in this magnificent Bugatti," Walter once explained in an AR interview about how he got into racing.
