Summary
Even before the competition, RM/Sotheby's auctioned 83 cars at the beginning of the Rétromobile on Place Vauban, which were estimated at a total of around EUR 40 million. The fact that sales ultimately only amounted to a good half of the hoped-for sum was mainly due to the fact that the expensive cars in particular did not find a buyer. This auction report describes the atmosphere on site, analyzes the results and shows the vehicles in many pictures.

Preview (beginning of the article)
Every year, RM/Sotheby's kicks off the series of auctions surrounding the Rétromobile in Paris. This was once again the case on February 7, 2018, when fine classics came under the hammer at Place Vauban. There were 83 cars in total, which were valued at an average of EUR 436,000 (CHF 546,000). Unlike in the USA, consignors and auction houses in Europe do not yet dare to offer the majority of vehicles without a reserve price. And for good reason, as it turned out, because not all consignors must have been very happy with the result achieved. However, the RM/Sotheby's people also had to contend with the weather. The tent was in danger of collapsing at one corner and the chairs had not arrived in time because the truck had broken down somewhere on the highway. The onset of winter took its toll.
