At the amfAR Gala at the Wynn in Las Vegas on November 22, 2024, RM/Sotheby's also auctioned off five cars for a good cause. "amfAR" is a global research institution that has raised almost USD 900 million for its various AIDS-related projects and programs. The gala event was hosted by Jay Leno. Naturally, many celebrities, including Sylvester Stallone and Diana Ross, were present in Las Vegas in the vicinity of the F1 Grand Prix.
Quite a German portfolio
The offer was clear and not atypical for the 2024 auction year. One racing car, three super/hypersports cars and one remaining mod worth a total of around USD 13 million went under the hammer for a good cause and without a bidding committee.
Porsche was present with three cars, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren-Mercedes with one car each. The average age of the cars was not quite 29 years.
The last 300 SL "Gullwing"
The five cars did not quite meet the (high) expectations. On average, 84% of the median estimate was bid. All cars together were sold for USD 10.8 million (or USD 2.17 million per vehicle).
It's not every day that you can bid on the last 300 SL "Gullwing" produced. Chassis 198.040.7500079 is a fire engine red coupé that was once built as an exhibition vehicle for a trade fair in Poland.
In 2004, the car took third place in a pure 300 SL class at Pebble Beach; the car had belonged to the same owner for 25 years.
The 300 SL did not quite reach the estimated value of USD 2.5 to 3.5 million, but USD 2.4 million (EUR 2.304 million, CHF 2.136 million) was enough to buy it.
Two Porsche super sports cars
With a Porsche Carrera GT from 2005 and a 918 "Weissach" Spyder from 2015, two of the famous Porsche super sports cars built in small numbers in the modern era came under the hammer.
The Carrera GT fared slightly better than the 918 compared to expectations, selling for USD 2.025 million (EUR 1.944 million, CHF 1.802 million) than the 918, which sold for USD 2.69 million (EUR 2.582 million, CHF 2.394 million).
USD 1.225 million (EUR 1.176 million, CHF 1.090 million) was paid for a 1994 Singer Porsche.
The last Newey-McLaren
USD 2.5 million (EUR 2.4 million, CHF 2.225 million) was paid by the new owner of the 2006 McLaren MP4-21.
Although this was only 79% of the median estimate, the Formula 1 car, which was driven in three races by Juan Pablo Montoya and was also used by the then young 21-year-old Lewis Hamilton for a test drive, still fetched a proud price.
