RM/Sotheby's "Duemila Ruote" auction 2016 - incredible prices for 2000 bikes
Summary
Around 850 cars, bicycles, motorcycles, boats, automobilia and spare parts packages were auctioned off by RM/Sotheby's between November 25 and 27, 2016 during a three-day marathon auction at the Milano AutoClassica. 422 cars, including well-kept classics such as a Ferrari 275 GTB/6C, but also restoration objects such as a Lancia Flaminia or Maserati Ghibli. It was almost like a madhouse, with 6000 bidders battling fiercely for sometimes rudimentary vehicle ruins, at times bidding up to 22 times the estimated value. The results can be found in this auction report, including some photos and an analysis of the results.

This was certainly the craziest auction RM/Sotheby's has held in 2016, or perhaps in its entire history. It was a three-day marathon with around 850 lots, including 422 automobiles, a bunch of motorcycles, many bicycles - a total of 2000 bikes (or a few more). There were also automobilia and spare parts ranging from rims to complete bodywork. And all of this from a single collection that one man amassed over many years, seemingly with almost no concept, but with a great deal of perseverance. Until he ran out of money and the tax authorities ordered the sale. Perfectly marketed, the auction attracted over 5000 bidders who registered. This figure alone, if it really corresponds to reality, probably paid for a considerable part of the effort. But the hammer had not even fallen yet.
