An assembly and automotive industry had already been established in Brazil in the 1920s. After the Second World War, European brands joined the North American brands. Volkswagen made a significant contribution to the motorization of this huge country with the "Beetle". Its platform frame also made it easier to build individual sports models. Puma Veiculos e Motores Ltda in São Paulo, founded in 1966, also benefited from this. It initially continued to manufacture the DKW-Malzoni sports model under this new brand, but switched from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive in 1968/69 with the Puma II GT 1500.
