Prince Motors Co. was formed in 1952 from the merger of two former Japanese aircraft manufacturers, the Nakajima Aircraft Co. and the Tachikawa Aircraft Co. which had designed the Zero fighter planes feared by the Allies. In addition to manufacturing the commercial vehicles that were so urgently needed in Japan, Prince specialized in the construction of mid-range passenger cars. By 1963, Prince had become the country's third-largest car manufacturer with an annual output of around 50,000 vehicles. The Skyline model series with 1.5 and 1.9 L engines was joined in 1962 by the larger and more luxurious Gloria with a 2 L six-cylinder engine, which impressed with its balanced, elegant body design. While the Skyline was assembled in Belgium from 1962 under the Nippon brand, the Gloria was launched in Switzerland in 1963 under the Mikado brand.
