Throughout the history of the automobile, entrepreneurs and designers have repeatedly tried to make it big with minimal cars. However, tiny cars that deviated in their concept from the "full-grown" models usually only achieved success with difficulty. In modern times, even the Smart showed how much perseverance is needed before new ideas for small cars are accepted by drivers. In the early days of the automobile, there were two small car brands in Germany whose very brand names indicated their modesty: Liliput and Piccolo. While the latter was built in Thuringia and found buyers until 1912, the Liliput built in Gaggenau, south of Karlsruhe, was less successful.
