The first Mercedes, developed by Wilhelm Maybach at Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, was a milestone in automobile development. In the same era, Panhard & Levassor also created a low-bodied car that was attractive to drive. The Chantiers de la Buire in Lyon started producing cars in 1904 and founded the Société des Automobiles de la Buire in 1905. The basis for the wide range of models was a doorless open-top car, which, following the example of Mercedes or Panhard, consisted of a powerful chassis, hood, two seats and petrol tank and promised pure driving pleasure thanks to its light weight. The 4-speed gearbox, which ran entirely on ball bearings, was particularly quiet. From 1906, there were four-cylinder models with 4.9, 7.5 and even 13.6 liter displacement; the latter enjoyed racing success in England and elsewhere.
