The Invicta could compete with the Bentleys of the early days, even if their engines, bodies and even the chassis were always built to order. Because Captain (later Sir) Noel Macklin was taken with the American Doble and Stanley steam cars, he strove for analogous smoothness for his own make. The first cars built by William Watson in Cobham, Surrey, had a 2.7-litre six-cylinder engine from Coventry Climax. In 1926, the 3-liter model with a Meadows engine appeared, with which the first 100,000-mile record (90.3 km/h in Monza) and race victories were achieved. The first 4.5-liter Meadows engine was available from 1928; it was also used in the luxury NLC model with an elaborate chassis structure, which competed with the small Rolls-Royces.
