Optimism prevailed again when the 47th Geneva Motor Show opened for ten days on March 17, 1977. After three years of uninterrupted decline in registrations due to the recession, more vehicles had been sold in 1976 than in the previous year. There were 203,834 new registrations, 7.3% more than in 1975, but still far below the record figures of 1972, when 258,912 new cars were put on the road. A further increase was expected for 1977 and it was hoped that over two million registered cars would be registered for the first time in 1978. It would probably never be much more, after all, every household would soon own a car, oracled Salon President François Peyrot at the time, while Federal President Kurt Furgler focused his speech at the opening of the Salon on improving the quality of life as the main goal for the future.
