Preview (beginning of the article)
For once, RM Auctions teamed up with Sotheby's to auction an exclusive selection of rare automobiles in New York on November 21, 2013. After a few Automobila pieces that had already fetched five-digit dollar sums - the hammer even fell at USD 110,000 for a child's Ferrari - it was time to get down to business. An F. B. Mondial 250 Bialbero Grand Prix motorcycle from 1957 was the first fully-grown vehicle to achieve a top bid of USD 130,000, after which the 32 automobiles were called. After just 30 seconds, Lot 109, a Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1960, had already exceeded the million mark, and the bidding went on in increments of a hundred to USD 1.5 million, which meant that the upper estimate had already been pulverized. And that was that. The car went to a telephone bidder.
