Summary
Like the 1950s, the 1960s were characterized by sudden changes, ups and downs and constant change. The German automotive industry had developed into an important economic factor, not least because of its high export share and the simultaneous rapid growth in domestic demand, and employed a considerable proportion of the workforce. The International Motor Show (IAA) grew steadily in the sixties, more space and more exhibitors made the exhibition in Frankfurt the largest vehicle exhibition in Europe. After focusing primarily on itself in the fifties and early sixties, the import brands became increasingly present and important towards the end of the decade. In technical terms, the sixties were characterized by the emergence of the Wankel engine and the growth of safety, efficiency and environmental compatibility efforts. Disc brakes and automatic gearboxes became more and more widespread, and vehicle size and engine power grew steadily. At the end of the sixties, it was possible to look back on a decade of almost unbelievable growth and the outlook for the future was also characterized by optimism. This article summarizes the years 1961 to 1969, or rather the five exhibitions, and shows photo documents from this period.
