The Goodwood Festival of Speed seems to be the right place to sell exquisite racing and sports cars from all eras to well-heeled collectors. On the afternoon of June 27, 2014, the English auction company sold 60% of the vehicles on offer for over £22 million, with the average price of the cars sold for around 120% of the median estimate.

For Robert Brooks, this was an "outstanding result" and Bonhams was indeed able to announce records and high prices. However, the 35 unsold vehicles must also have hurt a little, especially as they included the Aston Martin Atom prototype that had been announced to the public.
Fulfilled expectations with the Ferrari 375 Plus from 1954
The flagship, a Ferrari 375 Plus from 1954 with Mille Miglia and Le Mans history, actually achieved a very good result. The new owner paid just over ten million pounds (CHF 16,355,163 or 13,447,758 euros) for the famous racing car and its unrestored original bodywork.
This meant that the thoroughbred racing car fared better than some road-going Ferraris that failed to achieve the minimum bid, including a Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose Aluminum Coupé from 1966 and the Ferrari 166 Inter Coupé from 1949.

At least the 365 GTB/4, the F40 and the Dino 246 GTS found their way into new hands. So there can be no talk of a Ferrari crisis.
Lamborghini world record
The biggest surprise at the Festival of Speed, however, was the early Lamborghini Countach LP400 from 1975, which sold for almost twice the expected value, namely £ 953,500 (CHF 1,450,192 or Euro 1,192,396), which was rightly celebrated as a new world record for a Countach.
The right-hand drive car, which was never restored but was repainted once years ago, covered just 10,500 kilometers in its lifetime according to the catalog. However, this and the fact that only 157 of these early Countach were built do not fully explain the surprisingly high price.
The interesting Lotus Elite prototype with two-liter Climax engine and Le Mans (training) history from 1960 also made it over the "Estimate". £ 124,700 (Euro 155,943 or CHF 189,658) still seems reasonable considering its condition and rarity.
The 2001 BMW Z8 on offer, which embodied the modern era so to speak, also remained within the affordable range. £ 104,540 (Euro 130,732 or CHF 158,996) was enough to come into possession of the little-driven (mileage around 40,000) left-hand drive car.
Million-Healey
At least in Swiss francs, the 1955 Austin-Healey 100 S on offer also exceeded the million mark; in euros, the new owner had to fork out around 842 thousand.
A collector bought the rare and beautiful HRG Twin Cam Roadster from 1956 for considerably less, but still well above the estimate, which ultimately cost 232,976 euros or CHF 283,346.
Surprisingly expensive was a Jaguar XK 150 S 3.8 DHC from 1960, which sold for 203,100 pounds instead of the expected 70,000 to 90,000 pounds (Euro 253,986 or CHF 308,897).
Favorable opportunities?
The widely advertised 1968 F1 monoposto Lotus 49B disappointed, at least in comparison to the estimated price: instead of £ 700,000 to a million, the highest bidder was able to take home the famous racing car for £ 673,500 (Euro 842,243 or CHF 1,024,336).
The Davies Special CanAm Racer from 1962 was even cheaper, at £55,200. A few other vehicles could be knocked down despite a significant gap to the estimated value, but there were hardly any real bargains at Bonhams this time.
Some classics confirmed the high expectations, with a 1961 Jaguar E-Type Flat Floor Coupé selling for €253,986 or CHF 308,897 and the 1962 Facel Vega II changing hands for €153,141 or CHF 186,251.
The interesting Alta Supercharged Voiturette Racing Single-Seater from 1938 was worth Euro 246,983 or CHF 300,380 to its new owner.
