Summary
With a sales rate of 72%, Bonhams' "The Quail" auction did not quite meet expectations. However, in view of the record price achieved for a Ferrari 412P, the total turnover of almost USD 55 million was almost as high as expected. This auction review analyzes the results and shows the cars in pictures.

Preview (beginning of the article)
As every year, Bonhams organized its "Pebble Beach" auction in Carmel (California) on 18 August 2023. The auction takes its name "The Quail Auction" from the location "Quail Lodge & Golf Club's West Field". Bonhams brought 108 or 109 classic cars under the hammer on a single day. The 109th classic was a historic caravan that was included as an accessory, so to speak, with a Pierce-Arrow. Rupert Banner and Marteen ten Holder swung the hammer, the cars were all driven onto a beautifully designed stage and briefly introduced. Of the 108 cars, 78 were sold, which corresponded to a sales rate of 72%. In view of the 44% "no reserve" lots, this result was somewhat disappointing. In addition, the average highest bid of 78% of the average estimate was not as high as hoped for. But a single Ferrari made up for everything.
