The ex-Fangio Mercedes-Benz W196R from 1954 had been the talk of the town. The Argentinian won the German and Swiss Grand Prix with it, which also secured him the world championship title. An important one, but the price achieved still surprised the experts. The buyer was prepared to pay a whopping £ 19.6 million, the equivalent of € 22 million or CHF 28 million. This set a new absolute auction record. A video shows the dramatic moment. But the results of the auction, which Bonhams hosted on July 12, 2013 on the occasion of the Goodwood Festival of Speed , were also impressive, as 84% of the cars on offer were sold and the price level was considerable. In any case, the tent was very well attended and the phone lines were almost red-hot.
