At 13:00 on April 14, 2024, Bonhams began the auction of 100 cars worth around £ 8.5 million in the tent on the occasion of the super exciting race of the 30 Ford Mustangs as part of the Ken Miles Cup. In addition to the cars, 90 memorabilia items were also offered beforehand, but the bidders were not particularly enthusiastic. 27% of the cars went under the hammer without a reserve price. The auction lasted around 4.5 hours, and those who stayed in the Bonhams tent missed out on some of the racing action on the Goodwood circuit.
But those with enough patience were able to get their hands on some interesting classics, some of which came from collections.
British dominance
Around two thirds of the vehicles were built in Great Britain. British brands also dominated the largest selection, led by Jaguar (14 cars), Aston Martin (7) and Rolls-Royce (7). Only Ferrari (10 vehicles) and Porsche (5) were able to position themselves similarly strongly.
Some of the British brands were less successful in the auction. Only 36% of the Jaguars and 57% of the Rolls-Royces found a buyer, while the sales rate for Ferrari and Porsche (each with a not particularly exotic/expensive selection) was 80%.
Porsche also excelled in terms of bids, exceeding the estimated value by an average of four percent.
Only Mercedes-Benz and Morgan performed even better among the brands with multiple vehicles. On average, 84% of the median estimate was bid. Pre-war cars tended to be lower, young cars after 1980 higher.
"Foreigners" performed most strongly above expectations
With a sales price of £ 40,250 (EUR 47,093, CHF 45,885), a 1982 Porsche 928 was the biggest surprise, as the estimate of £ 15,000 to 20,000 had sounded much less hopeful.
The 1967 Citroën DS19 Pallas also sold well above expectations at £ 37,375 (EUR 43,729, CHF 42,608).
Two Mercedes-Benz also achieved results that were well above the estimates. These were a 1968 280 SE Convertible for £ 138,000 (EUR 161,460, CHF 157,320) and a 2008 SLR McLaren Coupé for £ 425,500 (EUR 497,835, CHF 485,070.
Among the high-flyers, British honor was saved by a Morgan 4/4 Roadster from 1978, which still changed hands at a reasonable price, and a Frazer Nash TT Replica Roadster from 1936, which fetched £ 276,000 (EUR 322,920, CHF 314,640).
Some bargain opportunities
There were also really reasonably priced cars for sale, some of which were knocked down well below expectations and for very little money.
For example, the Bentley Mark VI Saloon from 1951, which cost £5520.
The BMW 700 from 1961 for £ 6900 or the Triumph TR4 from 1962 for £ 9200 were also inexpensive. A Ford Mustang Hardtop Coupé from 1967 also seems like a bargain at £ 13,800, as does an MG TC from 1946 for £ 21,850.
For a Ferrari 412i from 1986, £ 25,300 changed hands, for £ 31,050 you could buy an Austin-Haley 3000 from 1960.
Pre-war specialties for little money
Even a four-figure sum was enough to buy one of the pre-war Alvis, although they certainly need work.
The 1927 Lanchester 23 HP Saloon Limousine could also be picked up for a reasonable £23,000, while a 1936 Talbot BI 105 Sports Saloon was brokered for £28,750.
29 cars not sold
Around 30 percent of the cars could not be sold.
Some of the racing cars on offer included the Cooper T52 from 1960, the Kieft 1100 Sports from 1956 and the Turner Formula 2 from 1953.
However, XK models from Jaguar and some of the more expensive vehicles, e.g. an Aston Martin DB6 Volante (conversion) or the Bentley R-Type Continental from 1954, were also badly affected by a lack of interest.
Overall, however, the cars offered at Bonhams performed respectably despite the competition for attention from the racetrack, and with a turnover of £ 5.07 million, one should not complain.
