In 1886, Karl Benz created the first German car with an internal combustion engine. Steam cars already existed, and experimental vehicles with internal combustion engines had already been built in France and other countries. But Benz paved the way for commercial production - as did Gottlieb Daimler, who created the first motorcycle in 1885 and motorized a carriage in 1886. Benz realized that the gas engine developed by Lenoir was more efficient than the steam engine. In the workshop he opened in Mannheim in 1871, he designed two-stroke and four-stroke engines. They were manufactured by "Benz & Co., Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik".
