Before the Auburn Speedster became the darling of Hollywood, the brand named after its place of origin in Indiana was on the road for a long time. In 1900, it emerged from the coachbuilding business of Frank and Morris Eckhart, sons of a German immigrant. Car production began in 1903 with doorless and roofless single-cylinder runabouts, followed by two-cylinder models in 1905, four-cylinder models in 1909 and six-cylinder models in 1912. In 1919, the plant went to a Chicago consortium, which offered 30-year-old sales genius Errett Lobban Cord the opportunity to lead the brand out of its lethargy and take it over in 1924.
