In the 1980s, there was still no run on old pretzel beetles or decommissioned VW buses. But there was a certain desire for open-top cars and so Roland and Gerhard Gysi began converting VW Beetles into convertibles. They did this alongside their work at a major bank and actually as a pure hobby. However, their activities did not go unnoticed and demand increased, so that the two brothers founded a company for this purpose in 1988, which they called Cagero(CabrioletUmbauten Gerhardund Roland). They were able to rent a commercial space, but the business remained a sideline for the time being. The first major growth step came in 1993, when Roland Gysi quit his job and devoted his time entirely to the flourishing business. The trade in spare parts for air-cooled Volkswagens became an important mainstay and thanks to the know-how generated over the years and good relationships in other European countries, but also in the USA, an ever-growing arsenal of spare parts could be offered.
