The fifth edition of the Touring Car Classics 2020 is already history. The venue was the race track in Assen in the north of Holland, around 20 kilometers south of Groningen. The circuit, which is originally designed for motorcycle racing, was a real challenge due to the asphalt conditions on the one hand and the partly banked corners on the other, which demand a lot from the chassis of the cars and the drivers.
Tight battle for position 3
For Gerhard Füller (Opel), Andre de Vries (BMW), Kris Nissen (BMW) and Otto Rensing (BMW), however, this did not seem to be a problem. They occupied the front row of the "Golden Era" grid. The four gave each other no quarter and delivered the best motorsport from start to finish. Füller and de Vries were able to pull away from their two pursuers, Nissen and Rensing.
The latter then settled the battle for the final podium place among themselves, which Nissen won by just four tenths of a second.
Technical difficulties struck for Roland Asch. Despite a third place in practice on Friday, he had to withdraw from the race due to a lack of oil pressure in his 1992 works Mercedes EVO2.
Mücke fast in the rain
The star of the rainy Sunday was Stefan Mücke in the Mücke Capri. He was able to drive his turbocharged racer safely to first place. Gerahrd Füller in the Opel STW and local hero Peter Stox in the Cup Porsche took the other two podium places with a clear gap to Mücke. Stox interfered mercilessly in the championship fight during the race, which paid off with third place due to the tussle between the former DTM professionals.
Drivers Rene Buch (BMW), Michael Saurski (Opel), Nico & Herbert Wittmann (BMW) and Willy Salzgeber (Audi) showed their skills in the rain and achieved impressive results.
Open until the end
The next and penultimate race of the championship at the Nürburgring from September 18 to 20, 2020 could theoretically decide the title. However, this is rather unlikely, as double points will be awarded in the finale in Zolder from October 9 to 11, 2020.
So it remains exciting!
