Alpine-Renault 's long-awaited dream of winning the Monte-Carlo Rally has come true. The French team places five of these vehicles, now equipped with 1.6-liter engines, in the top ten. Ove Andersson/David Stone win ahead of Thérier/Callewaert. Porsche brings the Type 914-6 with mid-engine to the start. But the attempt to follow up the 911 one-two victories of previous years fails miserably. Even Gérard Larousse, Ake Andersson and the two-time winner in the 911 S - Björn Waldegard - were unable to prevent the fiasco. When asked whether anything could still happen on the last night, Waldegard replies laconically: "Of course something can still happen. Certainly with a 911!" Waldegaard will be proved right, the 914 with its neutral handling is difficult to steer on snow and ice. They have no chance against the agile Renault-Alpines, which love to corner.
