After the first 23 km special stage from Saint-Didier to Montmain , Bo Ljungfeldt, feared from last year, is once again in the lead in a Ford Falcon, ahead of the Englishman Paddy Hopkirk in a Morris-Cooper S. Despite the plastic bodywork, aluminum bumpers and disc brakes, the 300 hp 4.4-litre engine and a huge number of assistants for the Ford Falcon, the 1.3-litre Cooper S only loses 16 seconds. After the special stage (SS) La Madeleine near Gap, Ljungfeldt finally pulled away and before the all-important stage over the Col de Turini, Ljungfeldt/Lager were already 65 seconds ahead of Hopkirk/Liddon in the Cooper S with less than 100 hp and Böhringer/Kaiser in a Mercedes 300 SE.
