90 teams entered, 65 started 24 finished, average speed increased to 40 km/h, Caracciola and Burggaller crashed, Northern Europe snowed in, the Balkans impassable, 9 hours for 130 kilometers, horses and oxen harnessed .... That's what it says in the January editions of many newspapers - often on the front pages. Already on the way to the starting points in the north, 23 wagons are hopelessly stuck in the snow. Only 67 remain and the number is steadily decreasing. Rudolf Caracciola - works driver at Mercedes-Benz and Ernst-Günther Burggaller - successful privateer driver in a Bugatti - are shot down in their Wanderer W 11 before Paderborn on the slippery road by the Birnholz brothers, who are too close behind. All of them are taken to hospital by Hans Joachim Bernet - also in a Wanderer. Only Caracciola is able to continue the ride in Bernet's "ambulance" - out of competition.
