"Just Fun" was the motto of this year's Int. ADAC Rallye Köln-Ahrweiler, which took place from November 13-15, 2015. The event offered the 80 or so teams an ingenious mix of motorsport, recreational fun and automotive history. The three-day event not only demanded the organizational talent of the organizers and the great voluntary commitment of all those involved, it also gave those interested in motorsport the opportunity to experience motorsport up close and not just in the distance of a closed-off race track.
Close decision
Georg Berlandy was able to celebrate his 10th triumph at the ADAC Rallye Köln-Ahrweiler. The record winner needed just 1:22:49.7 hours to complete the 13 special stages. He shared the success with his co-driver Ulrike Schmitt (Gutenberg), for her it was the first victory in the first rally season together with Berlandy. "I can't really believe it yet, but it was a point load with the Ascona. The car is definitely even better than mine. Then the typical weather and the fans, I simply drove myself into a frenzy this afternoon," enthused Berlandy after his victory.
Last year's winner Anton Werner (Landshut) in an Audi Quattro and co-driver Gabi Fischer (Heilinghausen) had to admit defeat at the finish line, just 2:22.3 minutes behind. "Congratulations to Georg Berlandy, we had no chance against him and the Ascona today. I think we'll have to upgrade next year," said Anton Werner after the rally.
Once again, the Porsche 911 RS team of Michael Küke and co-driver Joachim Carl finished in the top three of the rally. The decision between them and Werner was even closer, as they had just 22.2 seconds more than the runners-up on the boarding card.
Fourth place went to one of the most beautiful cars in the field, the Ford Escort RS 1800 with Thomas Kleinwächter (Moers) at the wheel and co-driver Rüdiger Baehr. At the finish line, however, the disappointment is palpable: "You have to accept it when others are faster. I really stepped on the gas. With the Escort's performance, we simply couldn't do any more and we crossed the finish line without a scratch!"
And what would the Köln-Ahrweiler be without our Belgian friends? After problems on Friday evening and a mixed Saturday morning, Rainer Hermann and Gabriel Hüweler really got going again at the end and in the end they even managed fifth place.
The Dutch were unbeatable at the Gold Cup
Dutchmen Bertram Altena and Chris Altink were once again unbeatable in the Opel Manta i 200. The joy of victory was clear to see at the finish line: "Great, the third victory for us in the Gold Cup at this fantastic event. It was great fun again."
After third place last year, Christopher Gerhard and Philipp Kluth in the BMW M3 were able to improve and were classified in second place. Jürgen Lenarz, who had come to the Ahr as defending champion, struggled with the rain tires and ultimately had to settle for third place this year.
Youngtimer Rally Trophy title for the second time
After 2012, Ford Escort RS 2000 driver Axel Potthast celebrated his second Youngtimer title this year. Co-driver Elmar Pernsch was also able to celebrate the title in the co-driver classification. "We hadn't expected it at all and have now been rewarded for a consistent season performance!"
Once again on the road in a Suzuki
After two starts in an Opel Kadett in recent years, Nikki Schelle, the 49-year-old master car mechanic, is now taking part in a Suzuki Ignis Super 1600. "I'm really looking forward to attacking with the Suzuki at the Köln-Ahrweiler. I competed in six rounds of the Junior WRC with a car like this in 2002." The Upper Bavarian proved that he has lost none of his skills at the end of October during the 3-City Rally. In a guest start in a Porsche 911 GT3, he was able to record a great third place for himself. As in Bavaria, Jan Enderle (Edenkoben), an experienced driver, is also in the hot seat at the Cologne-Ahrweiler.
An all-round success
Those responsible around rally director Klaus von Barby and organizer Hans-Werner Hilger were able to draw an extremely positive conclusion. "65 out of 90 vehicles crossing the finish line in these difficult weather conditions is a good result. We had no personal injuries to report and are grateful for the very disciplined behavior of the drivers and the numerous fans. This makes it easier for us to be able to offer such a highlight again next year!"
