A number of races with large starting grids made the Historic Sports Car Club's "Legends of Brands Super Prix" race weekend at the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit from June 30 to July 1, 2018 a huge success. In sunny weather, the weekend was characterized by exciting races in a sporty atmosphere.
One of the best performances of the weekend was seen in the second race of the classic Formula 3 championship, which consisted of a stunning grid of more than 30 cars. Tom Bradshaw battled his way through the field from 25th on the grid in his ex-Tassin Argo JM6 to win the race. In the first race, David Shaw (ex-Piquet Ralt RT1) defended the younger RT3 of Ian Jacobs.
Double winner
Michael Lyons was one of several double winners at the event, with a commanding victory in the Derek Bell Trophy on Lola T400. While Lyons set a breathtaking pace at the front of the field, a fine battle for second place raged in both races, thrilling the fans.
Another double winner was John Burton, who dominated the Pre '80 Endurance races in his Chevron B26. While Burton clearly dominated, Nick Adams (March 717), Kevin Cooke (March 75S) and John Spiers (Osella PA3) also took podium places. The sports cars from the seventies were a great sight with a rich engine sound.
Duels in the formula groups
Both races of the historic Formula 3 Championship quickly developed into duels between Jon Milicevic (Brabham BT21B) and Andrew Hibberd (Brabham BT18). In the end, the result was one to one as both drivers had problems in one of the races.
The guest races of the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association featured two excellent starting fields, which were split in the 1961 vintage. There were double victories for Jon Fairley (Brabham BT11/19) and Geraint Owen (Kurtis 500 Indy Car).
Historic Formula Ford
After a qualifying race won by Kevin Stanzl (Crossle 20F), two championship races provided more epic racing for the historic Formula Ford. Title contenders Ben Mitchell and Cameron Jackson went head to head, ending the weekend with a one-point lead for Mitchell.
Richard Tarling swept ahead as Mitchell and Jackson went off together with two laps to go. With one and a half laps to go, Jackson went over the curb at the Dingle Dell turn and crashed into Mitchell. Both cars went into the gravel while Tarling overtook. However, both cars were able to continue and secured the two remaining podium places, second and third.
Classic Clubmans, Formula Junior and Historic Saloon
Mark Charteris (Mallock Mk20/21) dominated a restarted Classic Clubmans race with John Harrison hot on his heels. Adam Paterson (Mallock Mk16) led the B class and Jonathan Loader (Tiga SC80) topped the Sports 2000 class. Chris Goodwin scored a maiden Formula Junior win in his Lotus 22 as a safety car period helped him pull away from Peter Morton's Lightning Envoyette. Peter de la Roche completed the podium.
Finally, a strong Historic Saloon field provided excellent competition as John Spiers and Philip House went head-to-head in their Lotus Cortina. Spiers set the early pace, but House caught up and was narrowly ahead at the flag.
