For three years, the Historic Airfield Race always took place on the last weekend in September and sank beneath the crowds of rain on Sunday at the latest. The monkey cold at the first edition in 2020 remains unforgotten, when a caterer unceremoniously brought his last supplies of mulled wine from the previous year on Sunday and they were sold like hot cakes. Organizer Wolfgang Heinz therefore decided to move the date forward to the first weekend in September. The decision proved to be the right one, as there were three days of glorious summer weather, meaning no mulled wine and very good historic motorsport to admire.

Practically the entire spectrum of circuit racing was covered. Formula and racing cars, touring cars including Nascars, motorcycles and sidecars. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to either drive timed, i.e. in the form of a classic GLP, or simply to do carefree demo laps. With 155 starters, there was a significant jump compared to last year. The oldest motorcycle at the start was a 1937 Matchless G 805.

The oldest car, a Lotus Eleven from 1956, which was also a Porsche Sport Spyder Replica with plenty of patina. The car had been parked for years and was finally back on the track. The actual year of manufacture is unknown, which is why the owner refrained from giving a specific year when naming the car. The latest car was a 2007 VW Formula Master. Two spectacular superkarts of the latest design with 1000cc supersport engines of Japanese origin were also run, much to the delight of the fans at the track. At over 2000, the number of fans was double that of the previous year. This was particularly due to the Sunday, which lived up to its name with temperatures of over 30°.
Fortunately, numerous GLPpro series starters took advantage of the two-month summer break between two events in Hockenheim at the end of July and the weekend of 30.9/1.10 for a start in Zweibrücken.

As expected, the "GLP Oldtimer/Youngtimer" proved to be the class with the most participants. As a result, they even had to be divided into two sub-classes on the 2 km long track. Nevertheless, there was a joint classification. The winner was Bernd Rhein in a 1977 Ford RS 2000, while Götz Horn and Gabi Finken in a BMW 318ti (1997) came out on top in the "racing car" class.
Good: The date has already been set for the same weekend next year, then from 30.08.-01.09.2024.
