The Classic 24 Hour Daytona 2017 took place from November 8 to 12, 2017 at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach. The aim is to revive the legendary races of the past on the same circuit.
In the '24-hour race', the participants competed in six different groups in five races each. The main race was supplemented by many support races so that, if all the practice and qualifying sessions are taken into account, there was almost constant 'track action' throughout the weekend.
The "Classic 24 Hour Daytona" not only attracted a record number of participants and motorsport fans, there were also many familiar faces among the visitors. The start list also included a number of well-known motorsport names, such as renowned Red Bull designer Adrian Newey, as well as Joao Barbosa, Aaron Scott, Dieter Quester, Luca Riccitelli, Ron Fellows, Lyn St. James, Jochen Mass, Patrick Long, Andy Wallace, Jurgen Barth, Butch Leitzinger, Memo Gidley, James Gue, Eric Curran, Jules Gounon, Terry Borcheller, Bruno Junqueira, Eric Van de Poele, Didier Theys and Gunnar Jeannette, and many more. As you can see from the names mentioned, there was a broad international field of drivers, reflecting the esteem in which this event was held.
Group C (1980 - 1990)
The 24-hour race started at midday on Saturday as part of a Group C race.
24 hours later, it was the turquoise-painted Leyton House Porsche 962 of Tommy Dreelan and Aaron Scott that emerged as the class winner, with the Tic-Tac-painted 962C of Hendrick Lindberg taking second place. Porsche double victory!
Group A (1960 - 1972)
Victory in Group A went to the Lola T70 Mk IIIB of Gerard Lopez and Frantz Wallenborn, who finished ahead of the McLaren M1B of British duo Andrew Beaumont and Nigel Greensall.
Group B (1973 - 1982)
The class win in Group B went to the Chevron B23/36 of Ryan & John Harrold with Kevin Wheeler, followed by another Chevron, the B36 of Josh Boller. Third place in this class went to a Red Bull BMW M1 Procar driven by Austrian racing legend Dieter Quester and Luca Riccitelli, the 1997 ISRS champion.
Group D (1994 - 2002)
Florent Moulin from Luxembourg drove home the victory in Group D in an Oreca-Dallara SP1, followed by Briton Nigel Greensall, this time partnered by Mark Brannon in the Riley & Scott Mk IIIC.
Group E (2003 - 2015)
In Group E, David Porter and Portuguese driver Joao Barbosa, who has regularly enjoyed success in US racing for many years, took overall victory in the Pescarolo 01-Judd. They started the final 45-minute race with a 15-second gap to the Courage/Oreca LC70E of Dean Baker and Eric Van de Poele, which Barbosa turned into an 18-second advantage at the end of the race with his superior driving style.
Group F (HSR/Exoten)
In Group F, the 99 Porsche 911/993 of Mike Gaulke and Thomas Merrill won ahead of the 911 Porsche RSR of Richard Stuart Milne and Pablo Peon from Argentina.
Mike Gaulke drove the same car to victory in the V/CTC Enduro race on Friday afternoon.
Trans Am race 2017
The 2017 Trans Am series finale was the next big attraction alongside the main event and attracted 43 starters in four categories (TA, TA2, TA3 and TA4). The series attracted mostly modern American muscle cars such as Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette, as well as Ford Mustangs.
Ernie France Jr's Ford Mustang took the win in the TA class, his tenth of the season, to end the series on a high note. In 2nd place was the Chevrolet Corvette of RJ Lopez, with the Ford Mustang of Tony Buffamonte taking the final podium spot.
It was a successful event, no wonder the organizers are already planning next year's event. In any case, the date for the next 24-hour classic in Daytona has already been set for November 9-11, 2018.
