After the two pre-war events of 1929 and 30, the Bernina-Gran-Turismo hill climb took place for the 8th time at the weekend as the crowning finale of the revived International St. Moritz Automobile Week.
Thanks to a good protection concept, the event could also be held in the two Corona years 2020 and 2021, making it one of the very few events that managed to get through the pandemic without a break.
Integrated into the St. Moritz Automobile Week
In order to have a little more time, the technical scrutineering in the park in front of the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains began on Thursday afternoon, while the participants of the Motorsport Rendezvous, which had been extended to two days, were still on their day trip.
With the "Kilomètre Lancé", the RM Auction, which took place for the second time, the two rallies "Targa Poschiavo Engiadina" and "Super Stick Shift", as well as the "Mobility Forum St. Moritz" and the "Motorsport Rendezvous", the "Bernina Gran Turismo" hill climb was now the conclusion and highlight of the International Automobile Week.
Dry and cool
In good conditions but with some cool temperatures, the track was put under the wheels four times.
As usual, around 80 cars and 20 motorcycles battled with full commitment over the 5.7 km and through the 50 bends up the Bernina Pass.
Porsche fastest
The fastest man in the Engadin was once again the German Florian Feustel in a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR IROC from 1974.
3:12.17 was enough for him to master the demanding hill climb course.
Once again, it was impressive that the Bugatti 35 C/B from 1927 with Martin Halusa (AUT) at the wheel lost just 46 seconds to the Porsche, which was almost 40 years younger and significantly more powerful.
The Blitzen Benz from 1909, already known from the "Kilomètre Lancé", completed the hill in 4:32.71 with a rebuilt body.
Classic car center in the mountains
The beautiful Engadin with its world-famous capital St. Moritz is slowly but surely working its way up to become the most important historical setting for classic car events in Switzerland.
With all the events, whether winter or summer, that took place in the valley this year, there is probably no other venue that can offer a similar density of top-class events.
