Preview (beginning of the article)
The Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio would have recently turned 100 years old. In the run-up to the German GP, Nico Rosberg was allowed to drive Fangio's W196, the winning car from the 1954 Belgian GP in Spa. The 650kg 2.5-liter monoposto was powered by an in-line eight-cylinder engine with mid-drive. At the end of its development in the summer of 1955, the engine developed around 280 hp and accelerated the monoposto to an impressive 280 km/h. The W196 came after a one-year break in development by Mercedes Benz in 1954, according to the new regulations of 2,500 cc without supercharging (or 750 cc with supercharger). Fritz Nallinger and Rudolf Uhlenhaut from Mercedes Benz gave preference to the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine.
