Summary
The M1 was Motorsport GmbH's first competition car without a production model. And it was born with pincers, because first there were problems with production, then a suitable racing series had to be invented first. Nevertheless, the M1 was a success, at least from a marketing perspective. Today, M1 vehicles are highly sought after by collectors and brand enthusiasts. This report describes the development and racing history of the BMW M1 and shows it in prototype, production and racing versions in many historical and current pictures.

The M1 was Motorsport GmbH's first competition car without a production model. While the technology was developed at BMW, Lamborghini was to supply the body and floor assembly. However, due to the economic problems at Lamborghini, there were considerable delays. In the end, a new production chain had to be found and the production of the BMW M1 became a jigsaw puzzle: the tubular frame was made by Marchesi, the glass-fiber reinforced plastic body by T.I.R., both based in Modena. Giorgio Giugiaro's company ItalDesign assembled both and took care of the interior. The car was then sent to Stuttgart, where Bauer installed the entire BMW mechanics and the gearbox supplied by ZF.
