Under the motto "Very important cars only", the fifth Schloss Bensberg Classics (SBC for short) took place on September 8 in the eponymous grand hotel near Cologne in partly pouring rain.
This year's series of events for classic automobiles was once again characterized above all by exclusivity and high quality: Against the backdrop of the Grand Hotel, the FIVA-A-Concours d'Elégance once again showcased exceptional and rare gems, many of which were only built once.
Choosing the most beautiful
The jury was also top-class: Giorgetto Giugiaro, Chris Bangle, Jacky Ickx and Andrea Zagato were among the judges. Dr.-Ing. Franz-Josef Paefgen chaired the jury.

Rally with a prominent line-up
On the day before the Concours evaluation, an illustrious field of prominent drivers and co-drivers from the fields of culture, sport and business once again took part in the Rallye Historique of the 5th Schloss Bensberg Classics in 2013, including Günther Netzer, pianist Lang Lang, actors Sonja Kirchberger, Erol Sander and Herbert Knaup as well as television presenter Wolfram Kons.
In addition to jury member Jacky Ickx, multiple Le Mans winner and two-time Formula 1 runner-up, German racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck also took part in the rally.
Of the 100 or so rally cars, 16 were from the pre-war period - the oldest car was a Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Tourer from 1925. Highlights among the cars taking part from 1945 onwards included a Porsche Knickscheiben Coupé, a DKW Monza, an AC Bristol, a Maserati 3500 GTI Sebring and a Ferrari 500 Superfast. In addition, there were other fascinating historic vehicles from Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen and Bugatti, whose vehicle repertoire included the oldest participant vehicle, the legendary Type 35 from 1926.
The teams had to complete numerous regularity tests, which required absolute driving precision. Edith and Christian Kramer in a 1955 Mercedes 300 SL were the overall winners of the Rallye Historique.
Special exhibitions for jubilarians
Schloss Bensberg Classics 2013 also featured five special exhibitions, all of which were dedicated to major automotive anniversaries: The Italian sports car brand Lamborghini as well as the Porsche 911 and the Porsche 904 GTS are known to be fifty years old this year, while the Karmann Ghia Type 14 is celebrating its sixtieth birthday.
Legendary Porsche 911 rally cars were on display at the SBC 2013, including the white Porsche 911 SC San Remo, in which two-time world champion Walter Röhrl competed against arch-rival Michèle Mouton in 1981. The Porsche 911 Carrera 4x4 Paris-Dakar, which won the toughest rally in the world at the time in 1983, was also on display. Also on display were a 911 S 2.5, a 911 SC "Safari", a 959 Paris-Dakar from 1986 and a 911 GT3 from 2004.
Lamborghini special show with unique pieces
To mark the 50th anniversary of the Italian brand Lamborghini, the organizer presented a unique collection of early Lamborghini one-offs in the Schlosspark. In addition to the 350 GTV, the very first Lamborghini ever, the 400 GT Flying Star, a two-door sports estate from 1966, the Miura Roadster, which wowed the audience and jury at the 2011 Concours d'Elégance of the Schloss Bensberg Classics, the Marzal prototype from 1967 with glazed gullwing doors and ultra-flat front end, and the Bravo, the "little brother" of the Countach from 1974, were on display.
Also in the park: the one-off Lamborghini Egoista designed by Walter de'Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen Group, to mark the 50th anniversary of Lamborghini.
The prototype of the Karmann Ghia from 1953, which appeared somewhat rustic in some details, and the 1963 prototype of the Porsche 904 GTS mid-engined sports car were shown in Bensberg.
Exclusive setting for classic vehicles
What sets the Schloss Bensberg Classics apart, in addition to the top-class field of participants and the equally top-class jury, is the exclusive setting offered by the Grand Hotel. The hotel, which belongs to the Althoff Group, offers both the public and participants the right ambience and culinary highlights.
Due to the rainy weather, it was mainly the real classics fans who made the pilgrimage to Bergische, so there was certainly no question of crowds. Bensberg has established itself as one of the few FIVA-A Concours d'Elégance worldwide and it will be interesting to see what the organizers have planned for next year.
