After last year's success, there was no shortage of visual attractions at the 71st edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 21, 2022. More than 200 cars from 19 different countries took part in the competition in Monterey and tried to get their hands on a prize. Statistically speaking, the chances were good: more than 100 awards were presented at this year's ceremony, including 22 special prizes.
At the top again
The US manufacturer Duesenberg has six best-of-show victories so far at the beauty contest in California. In recent years, however, this tradition has been somewhat forgotten. After several triumphs by Mercedes-Benz, it took a whole nine years for a car manufacturer from the United States to win the "overall victory" again. This year it was that time again, and the 1932 Duesenberg J Figoni Sports Torpedo, driven by Lee R. Anderson Sr., returned to the old days by winning the "Best of Show" grand prize at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
Three second winners
However, there were other hot contenders for the title, including Fritz Burkard's 1937 Talbot-Lago T 150 C-SS Figoni & Falaschi Teardrop Coupé, Sam and Emily Mann's 1930 Duesenberg J Graber Cabriolet and Merle and Peter Mullin's 1951 Talbot-Lago T 26 Grand Sport Farina Cabriolet, which narrowly missed out on the top spot.
Burkard was nevertheless able to celebrate victory in the closed pre-war European class. The Manns won the special class of Graber-bodied cars with their Duesenberg. Peter and Merle Mullin secured first place in the special class for Talbot-Lago Grand Sport.
The countdown is already underway
The countdown to the 72nd edition of the Pebble Beach Concours is already underway on the official website. In terms of announcements, we can look forward to coachbuilders Joseph Figoni and Spanish sports car builder Pegaso. In addition, Mercedes-Benz S, McLaren, Alvis and US dream cars of the 1950s will be the special categories of 2023.
