We can settle the differences of opinion between two visitors on the way to the classic car meeting in Böblingen. The organizer was not the Meilenwerk. After all, the location for collectors' vehicles and classic cars in the listed halls of the former Stuttgart state airport has been operating under the name Motorworld since 2014.
To make a long story short, the target group of Motorworld, namely youngtimers and collector's vehicles, overlaps with the interested parties of Retro Classics, which is aimed more towards classic cars. The Retro Classics events, with a season opening in spring and a season closing in fall, should be supplemented by a joint highlight in the middle of the year.
The Motorworld event in Böblingen near Stuttgart has now found a suitable co-organizer in Retro Classics, a perfect combination.
The open-brand classic car meeting takes place regularly every year. This year, the theme "50 years of the BMW 3 Series" lent itself to a special show, which was held both in the open area and in the Legends Hall at Motorworld in cooler temperatures.
Anyone looking around the open area was able to discover a large number of BMW 3 Series cars. On the open-air site, however, as usual, there were vehicles from a wide variety of manufacturers from the last 70 years of automotive history.
When the car turns upside down
The ADAC was at the start with a rollover simulator, a really sensible idea. Usually, no driver is prepared for their vehicle to flip upside down and reacts frantically and incorrectly in an emergency.
First of all: stay calm! Then stretch out your arms and support yourself on the roof before unbuckling your seatbelt - your body weight needs to be supported. If there are two people in the car, the fitter one should free himself first and then help the passenger to get out. A tip on the side: If someone has the bold idea of trying to get the car back on its feet with helpers, be sure to apply the handbrake first! Otherwise the car rolling away and any helpers standing around could be in for further trouble - the author speaks from personal experience.
The test candidate photographed obviously enjoyed the turning maneuver. She allowed herself to be "turned around" several times.
Despite the forecast high temperatures of over 30°C, the meeting was well attended. There were only a few places to park your car in the shade. Many stands offered refreshment with drinks and a variety of food.
In addition to car-related services, anyone looking for clothing or art for the home was sure to find what they were looking for. The youngest members of the family were also catered for. In a cool hall, they could train undisturbed for their future racing careers on bobby cars. One or two start-ups from the region were also on show.
Every vehicle tells its own story
The Mercedes patrol car (W123) met with much more interest and approval here than when it was in use. How times change.
Only a few of the BMW Touring models that were used as station wagons have survived in good condition. There were two of them on display. One, the red and white service vehicle, was contributed by Julian Reichl, event manager of Motor World. Congratulations on the car in top condition.
The red M3, exhibited in the Legends Hall, set off from Eckenfelden behind Munich at 02:00 in the morning and drove here on its own wheels. With mixed tires on OZ rims, 235 at the front and 285 at the rear, it puts its power well on the road. Only the brakes were enlarged. Otherwise, the technology of the well-maintained car corresponds to the standard version. Unfortunately, they already had a driver for the return journey, otherwise I could have helped out ...
Loud disco music literally drew you to Denise Ritzmann's red tent. The power woman, who makes announcements to men during the day as a TÜV inspector, works on her racing cars in her free time. She was Drift Champion with her BMW E30 in 2018 and 2019.
But stop, it doesn't look anything like a BMW in the engine compartment, there's something wrong. For the Chevrolet Big Block LSX 454, a racing engine with a displacement of 7.4 l, good for 600 hp with 800 Nm, the bulkhead had to be moved to the rear, otherwise it wouldn't have fitted. It was simply not possible to find a German engine with similar performance. The US engine is quite flat due to the bottom-mounted camshafts. The hood only had to be moved upwards by a few centimetres to create space. The sound check requested by the audience could be heard all over the square, music to the ears of the visitors.

The eye-catching BMW E30 Artcar was sprayed live at the last Stuttgart HipPop Open in 2014. After that, there was little interest in the vehicle here. "Emigrated" to the USA, the car was presented and celebrated as a highlight at various tuning shows in L.A. Having only returned to Germany three months ago, the exhibit "landed" directly at Motorworld, where its paintwork could be seen on Sunday.
The exchange of experiences with enthusiasts of other brands, which is achieved in personal conversations on the site, is a reason to travel to Böblingen again next year.
