The 11th OCC Jungfrau Rally had a new venue on August 26 and 27, 2016: for the first time, Spiez on Lake Thun provided the backdrop for the rally, where traditionally only ladies are allowed behind the wheel. Men are welcome as navigators (and mechanics). The 2016 edition of the OCC Jungfrau Rally was more popular than ever: all starting places were sold out by Easter. That's a record.
International
A total of 91 teams from Switzerland, Germany, Liechtenstein and Belgium took part. They drove cars from 1947 to 1986 and the field was a colorful mix. Everything was represented, from the Fiat 500 to numerous roadsters of various provenance to the venerable old Rolls Royce.
Typical "men's cars" such as the Fiat-Abarth 1000 TC or the Alpine-Renault A110 also mingled with the starters.
Water at the center
The motto of this year's OCC Jungfrau Rally was "The Jungfrau by the water". Accordingly, the start and finish were in a uniquely beautiful location in the middle of Spiez Bay. Water also played an important role in the two daily stages.
On Friday, the rally led to the origins of the Emme. The teams had to find part of the route using a map on which only the bodies of water were marked.
Finally, on Saturday, the lakes and waterfalls of the Bernese Oberland were the focus of the route selection. As always, various intermediate tests had to be completed along the way. The OCC Jungfrau Rally offered a mix of light barrier tests, skill exercises and estimation questions of all kinds.
Skill in demand
The main destination on Saturday afternoon was the Hasliberg. The rally had received permission to take the route along a road that is not normally open to traffic. Among other things, it led through part of the Hasliberg ski area. Accordingly, the teams had to prove their winter suitability beforehand. The task was to "put a ski on" the car, i.e. to stop with the front wheels exactly in the area of the binding. This is not so easy when the ski is in the middle of the car.
Impressive performance
The 92 registered teams covered a total of 346.8 kilometers on each of the two daily stages, which corresponded to a total of over 30,000 km, although not all of them managed to complete the entire route without detours and a few had to abandon the race prematurely. In the process, they collected a total of 69,150 penalty points, of which they were able to work off 4440 at the duckfish game on Friday evening.
In view of the hot weather, they also drank a lot, with the organizers bringing in around half a tonne of mineral water.
Enjoyable travel
Apart from that, the main focus was on enjoying the mountains, lakes and landscapes. This also worked out wonderfully thanks to the consistently beautiful weather on the last weekend in August.
Despite the relatively high temperatures (over 30 degrees), there were relatively few breakdowns. The atmosphere among the teams was great, which was clearly evident at the evening meals and when resting along the way.
Youngsters in front
First place in the overall standings went to a young team from eastern Switzerland: the Eberhart / Kaspar team won the 2016 Jungfrau Rally with a BMW 2002 Touring from 1974.
The next OCC Jungfrau Rally will once again be held on the shores of Lake Thun. The organizers plan to announce further details in the second half of September.
