The oldest automobile factory in the world is located in Untertürkheim. It bears the names of Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, from whom something special emanates, something solid, patriarchal, settled. That is why it is simply inconceivable that - as was recently the case at Studebaker - a freshly arrived general manager at Daimler-Benz could take those responsible by surprise with the suggestion: "Friends, we are going to do something completely modern, something that the world doesn't believe we can do: we are going to build an "Avanti"! However, when I saw the 230 SL for the first time, I knew that this time in tradition-conscious Untertürkheim there must have been as big a revolution as at Studebaker, because a car like this had never been seen before at Daimler-Benz! It was a sports car that had completely shed the eggshells of the Silver Arrows on the outside, a simple and therefore incredibly beautiful car.
